My Pioneer Ancestors

Welcome to Australia
Land of the Free

To forget one's ancestors is to be a brook without a source,
a tree without a root.
Chinese Proverb

My Pioneer Ancestors all had something in common, they left their more civilized European towns, cities or farms leaving all their friends and family for a new unknown life. They came over after the convict days and before the start of twentieth century.

This means they immigrated on tall ships which were a hazardous journey alone taking three months at sea or more to take up the back breaking pioneering life of selecting land and farming in many cases.

These pioneers lived in tents or dwellings that they built themselves from the bush around them and what they had brought with them. The reason they did this was freedom, a chance for land of their own and a new life where they weren't taxed as heavily.

They didn't even come to Australia because it was before Federation in 1901 and the rest of the world was different as well. Germany encompassed far more territory before The Great War. Many other nations have vanished or risen since those times and territory is won and lost in war. My descendants have crossed many borders to get here and these are their stories. The information is in two sections;

← The Data Base (links on the left) and The Family Web Pages (links to the right) →

Data Base

I have traced my ancestors on both sides of the family up to and beyond first coming to Australia. The data base contains names of descentants known to me. This includes maternal sides and well as paternal sides. Care should be taken searching for women in the data base searching under their married name, please use women's maiden names when searching.

Remember to read the wanted page, you may be able to supply some of the information that is badly needed. Some information is based on family history books published in the 1980's. There is a lot a data missing for events in the last three decades.

There will be more links to other sites of genealogical interest in the future.

Below are some of My Pioneer Ancestors.

I will begin on my mother's side because it shows all the maiden names of my ancestors. All these are surnames that contributed to my gene pool but were lost because children take their father's surname.

Frieda Elisabeth Bogisch
Born 30 Nov 1878 Ebenezer Mission, Nhill, Vic, Australia
Married 3 Dec 1903 Unknown
Died 8 Sep 1937 Nhill, Vic, Australia
More

She married John Thomas Whitehead. He was both a grandson of James Whitehead and Elizabeth Richardson on his father's side and Robert Robinson and Fanny Buttolph on his mother's side.

As Frieda was the eldest Bogisch child she inherited the family records and photographs. Along with her own memorabilia of her personal photo album, autograph book and other family donations has created what is referred to as "The Whitehead Collection" and was handed down to her descendants.

Only a handful of these photographs and records have ever been seen in public. They are of great historical importance and the bulk of it being her personal collection will be on Frieda's Web Page as they are released.

Other images and records will be spread over on the main Bogisch Family Pages.

My ancestor's name was notFrieda Elizabeth Bobish or Frieda Elizabeth Bobisch
She was not born in Kurnbruin , Victoria.
She was born at the Ebenezer Mission which was also known as the Lake Hindmarsh Mission,
It is on the Wimmera River at a district called Antwerp and Nhill is the nearby township.

It was Toni Whitehead (Second wife of J.T. Whitehead) who was born at Kurnbrunin.
(Kurnbrunin is an area on edge of the scrub near Pella, which is west of Rainbow, Victoria).

I am sure this information alone will sort out a few family trees, sorry about the tirade.

His Wife

Maud Henrietta Pohlner
Born c. 1887 Australia

Married   Australia
Died 24 Aug 1940 Ballarat Victoria
More

Her death certificate shows both the below people as her parents and her daughter's wedding certificate names her mother as Maude Heinriette Pohlner but the Pohlner family tree book omits her.

Those who knew the true story why knew how to keep a secret to their graves. When her husband returned to Ireland her half brother Walter helped her move, also her children called him Uncle Walter.

I would like to obtain her birth certificate to settle the matter once and for all. A date of birth would be a great start, about 1887 I estimate as it shows her at 57 years
on the death certificate.
